Beach Holiday vs Cleaning My House?

June 2, 2014

So how do you usually spend your public holiday weekends? For us, we’re pretty boring. We usually fill it with domestic stuff like cleaning our house, mowing the lawn, doing the laundry, airing our rugs. Glamorous, no?

However, for the recent long weekend, we decided to head down to the south coast (Dunsborough) for a quick beach holiday.

Aside from our paid accommodation, we jammed in as many FREE activities as we could.

Dunsborough 2014

We went for a coastal walk, which involved scrambling over a lot of rocks.

I was wearing fashion boots (tsk tsk) which had NO grip on the rocks, so I had to take them off and climb barefoot. What a fashion fail.

Dunsborough 2014

We found rock pools with crabs and fish.

Dunsborough 2014

This is Meelup Beach. My husband taught the kids about the difference between “swell” and “waves” (otherwise known as “seas”). There was almost none of either… apparently, which is why the ocean was as flat as a pancake.

Dunsborough 2014

We saw whales and dolphins! And we explored caves, went for a beach run, ate exotic bread and ice-cream, had barbecues, toasted marshmallows, made giant sandcastles, etc etc!!

It was a fun and refreshing little trip. But now I can’t wait for this weekend, so I can mow the lawn and clean our house!!

Staying Connected on Holiday with Telstra 4G

January 23, 2014

Demark Roads

Telstra has sponsored me to share my experience of using a Telstra 4G Mobile Broadband device while on holiday.

This was a no-brainer, since over the New Year break, our family headed down to the Great Southern Region of Western Australia – a place famous for its big trees, lush forests, sparkling rivers, amazing beaches, wines, cheeses and chocolates.

We stayed on a remote farm with friends and their kids. We did lots of fantastic activities like boating, fishing, swimming, bush walking, building go karts, riding on quad bikes, driving around the farm on the tractor and ute.

It was so much fun!

Now, we have a pretty strict rule when on holiday, that we do not check our work emails. That’s the point of the holiday is to get AWAY from all of that, right?

But this year, we wanted our kids to be able to Skype with their grandpa everyday while on holidays. He has been a bit sick recently, so we wanted to stay in close contact with him and to cheer him up with all our photos and stories.

So we gave the kids a digital camera and let them take snap shots of all their adventures and favourite holiday moments, which we uploaded to an online photo album. Then they would Skype with him while they all viewed the online photos at the same time.

Here are some pics they took.

Farm Quad Bike

My big boys messing about on a parked quad bike.

Farm Go Kart

The dads and kids made a go kart and took turns to roll down the hill.

Farm

Er yep, this is what happens when you let a 8 year old take photos of “interesting” things during his holiday trip!

Some other ways we used the device to make our holiday better:

We planned to do a bit of bush exploring and wanted to find the location of a waterfall picnic area that we had heard of. So we used the device to help us look up maps and information of the region, and showed the kids where our next adventure was going to be.

And one night we streamed a 58 minute TV documentary about Great White Sharks off YouTube, and huddled around the laptop to watch it! It was very unexpected and entertaining, and a great way to calm the kids down for bedtime (well, sort of!).

Oh and I ASLO used the device to check out the post Christmas and New Year sales haha!

Telstra 4G Mobile Broadband Device

The mobile broadband device says it can connect up to 5 wi-fi enabled devices simultaneously. We did in fact connect 4 (a Samsung Galaxy and iPhone), an ipad and a laptop… at the same time.

It worked just like it was supposed to, and I noticed that it would switch between 4G and 3G, depending on availability, even while we were Skyping, without dropping the link. This is while we were on a farm surrounded by trees and hills, 30kms from the nearest town, and at least 4km from the nearest major road where a mobile tower might be. Apparently, there is an antenna that you can plug in to improve reception, but we didn’t test that.

So while we won’t use mobile connectivity to check our work email and social media every single day on holiday, it’s been really great to have that capacity to stay connected to family, and to download stuff to enhance our holiday!

What? It’s Over ALREADY!?

January 4, 2014

I can’t believe that the whole Christmas/New Year season is over already!

Happy New Year everyone!… even though it is the 4th January already! Time has slipped away from me, due to the very busy, very fabulous, very exhausting holiday I just got back from.

We went to stay with friends on a little farm in Denmark (South West Region of Western Australia), and these are just some of the highlights.

Go Karting, Denmark

A go-kart built in four hours out of an old pram, a chair, and other random things from the farm shed.

Denmark 2014, Fishing

I have not been fishing since I discovered boy bands.

But this holiday, I caught not one, but TWO fish haha!

(However, they were so small that we threw them back into the water.)

Marron

From a pond on the farm, we caught and ate wild marron, a kind of freshwater crayfish that is considered a delicacy in Western Australia.

Although my husband insisted that it looked like a giant black cockroach crossed with a lobster, I was more than happy to cook it and eat it with a tiny squeeze of lemon.

Our host explained that marron survive regular Western Australian summer droughts by just walking over dry land to another water hole when they need to! I felt honored to be eating an animal with such excellent survival skills.

Moombaki Wines

We visited a local winery called Moombaki and bought one of the last bottles of wine from an award winning, 2004 vintage. It was exquisitely smooth, and was so freaking amazing – can you tell I am not a wine expert? Perhaps knowing that it was one of the last bottles made it even nicer.

Ohlalollypop Shop

And now I know where the phrase ‘like a kid in a lolly shop” comes from. We wandered into this tiny, amazing shop called Ooh La Lollipop in a very pretty little town called Bridgetown.

It’s PACKED with every kind of candy you could imagine, and Liam was delirious with excitement.

But alas, every holiday comes to an end. Although, to tell the truth, I am glad to get back home to a more regular routine… and a brand new year.

Wish you were here!

Dwellingup Trees

I’m sitting with a laptop on my lap, in a rusty tractor, parked in an old metal shed, on top of a hill, in the middle of a paddock, on a farm, in the South West region of Western Australia.

Why? Well, I’m on a holiday trip with my family, and I am using this opportunity to literally road test a Telstra 4G high speed mobile broadband device, that can provide wireless connections for multiple devices at once. I have agreed to review it for Telstra, and this holiday, where we are in multiple remote-ish locations over the course of a week, is the perfect opportunity.

I hear the sweet, rich sounds of the bush. The birds singing, the crickets chirping, the trees and wind echoing through the valley… it’s simply beautiful and breathtaking.

And we are 30 kms from nearest town – which is why I am in the tractor shed… it is on top of the hill, so it gets the signal over that distance, and over the ZILLIONS of trees around here.

Wish you were here!

My Red Headed Flying Fox

July 18, 2013

Liam on Flying Fox
I wanted to share this photo of my little 4 year old… because it makes me a little fuzzy inside.

And I need a bit of that right now.

You see, as I write this, the kid has been a horrible little monster.

And I just need to reassure myself (and the internet) that I don’t actually want to sell him to the local childcare as a permanent child helper, who lives in a box in the shed. Did I really say that? Maybe.

Here he is in the photo… sitting on a flying fox, 2 metres up in the air. He’s terrified, frozen with fear, yet putting on a brave face. He wants to be just like his big brothers.

As he whizzed past me (taking a picture of him) on the flying fox, he mouthed out to me – I LOVE YOU MUM, followed by a theatrical and crazy-eyed AAAAHHHHHH!

I love you too, you crazy little red-headed boy.

A Mermaid Moment

June 9, 2013

Here’s another snap shot from my holiday trip last week – we were doing a bit of rock climbing off Castle Rock at Dunsborough.

Dunsborough Rocks

The adults and older kids organised a bit of “proper” rock climbing and abseiling. While the little kids played on the beach and did a bit of scrambling over the rocky landscape.

My 4 year old and I tiptoed over these rocks (in the photo above) and climbed up the rock face (in the background of this photo) which doesn’t actually look as scary and steep in real life!

Castle Rock, Dunsborough

During afternoon snacks of apples, bananas and cheese biscuits… I wandered down to the edge of the water for 15 minutes of quiet time.

I sat on a rock and enjoyed watching the slow, wave movement of the calm ocean, rising up and down the rocks. The crystal clear water looked like a mesmerising looking-glass into another realtity, rising and falling like a breathing creature.

It was a magical and so peaceful.

Swimming With The Elephants

January 7, 2013

During our family holiday down in the Great Southern Region of WA, we visited a beeeeautiful beach called Greens Pool.

The colours were just amazing!

Denmark WA 2012 - Greens Pool

It’s a sheltered beach with crystal clear water and soft white sand, making it perfect for families with children.

The water was a bit cold though, being the Southern Ocean and all.

However, this particular day was 42C, so dipping in the cool water was a refreshing relief.

Denmark WA 2012 - Greens Pool

Locals say that while you’re at Greens Pool, the “thing you have to do” is to jump off the rock in the middle of the bay (into the icy water).

My 3.5 year old, who has inherited my aversion to cold water, refused to swim with us and climb on the rocks in the water.

So we made him a “rock” on the beach for him to jump off. As you can see from this picture, he ain’t no ballerina.

Denmark WA 2012

A little later we all walked east, skipping over the huge rocks, to another little cove.

Denmark WA 2012 - Elephant Rocks

This place was called Elephant Rocks. Yes, because if you have the gift of imagination (unlike my three annoyed children), there are a bunch of rocks here that look like a herd of elephants. (To see a larger photo, you can click on the picture above.)

The place was so pretty. It looked so much like the tropical waters of South East Asia.

It was very shallow, so we waded far out into the bay. I took my two big boys for a swim out and around the large rocks. The water was so clear. We saw lots of fish and our feet were tickled by weird looking seaweed.

It was just gorgeous! It reminded me of my scuba diving adventures many years ago, and it made me hanker for some awesome snorkeling.

Hello 2013!

Denmark Farm, WA

We are spending our new year celebrations in WA’s Great Southern Region.

We are on a farm and there is a creek, tractors, animals, walking tracks, lots of trees and the ocean is down the road.

Here’s me standing on the balcony, surrounded by farmland and forest, looking out into the distance… and wishing everyone a great start to the new year!!

The Money Shot

October 2, 2012

Margaret River

So, this is where I was and what I was doing, last weekend.

The above photo was taken at the White Elephant Cafe in Gnarabup Beach, Margaret River. The cafe had a few wooden tables over looking the beach, and ahhh it was bliss. I find that a steak burger always tastes better when eaten overlooking the Indian ocean!

We had a family holiday “down south”, as we say in my home town. It was fantastic! We only went for three days, but it was enough for me to rest and recharge my batteries.

We stayed with friends, who also had 3 kids, so most of our activities were tailored for the children.

Busselton, Dunsborough and Margaret River are very popular holiday destinations for the people who live in Perth. It’s only a 2.5 hours drive south, and it is full of awesome food places, local wineries, cheese factories, chocolate factories, bush walking, hiking, caves to explore, boating, fishing, zillions of playgrounds for the kids… and the best beaches in the world, in my humble opinion :)

Busselton Jetty

This is Busselton Jetty, the longest wooden jetty in the southern hemisphere (about 2km long). There’s a train that can take you to the end of the jetty, and there’s an underwater aquarium at the end too.

(Many years ago, I did a scuba dive at the end of the jetty AT NIGHT! It was pretty amazing!)

We took the kids to lots of interesting parks and places, including the Yallingup 3D Maze and Puzzle Cafe.  And a climb through Giant’s Cave!

I also managed to squeeze in a quick 20km cycle for myself.

But most of all we relaxed and hung out at the beach.

It was young boy heaven. They had a gang of friends to run around with, water to splash in, sticks to sword fight with, rocks to climb on, and sand to make castles with.

It was a simple and easy holiday, but we all had a fantastic time!

A Weekend of Mountain Biking

December 1, 2011

Camping at Honeymoon Pool, Nov 2011

Last weekend we went camping in the Wellington National Park at a place called Honeymoon Pool, about 2 hours drive south of Perth.

We went with 3 other families, all with children aged from 2 to 12 years old. It might sound a bit full-on, but in my opinion, camping with other families is the only way to go.

We did a bit of hiking, bush walking, swimming and kayaking in the river, cycling and mountain biking. Most of the adults (and lots of kids) were cycling enthusiasts so I was in fine company to explore my new found passion for cycling.

Cycling Around Wellington National Park, Nov 2011
Me about to start my ride!

And yes I did stop to adjust my helmet strap after I saw the condition of the track.

Cycling Around Wellington National Park, Nov 2011
Holy shit look at that track!! It just went down hill from there. We were on top of a zigzag trail, that was etched onto the side of a big hill – which felt like a mountain to me!

I spent a glorious hour riding along bush trails, ducking under branches, swerving around pot holes, sliding along the loose gravel and dodging the massive craters in the ground!

It was really exciting and so much fun, but a huge part of me couldn’t get past the fact that it was SO FREAKING DANGEROUS!

Camping at Honeymoon Pool, Nov 2011
The forest was amazing.

It was a warm day, but the tall trees filtered out the sun and heat, casting a beautiful diffused light everywhere. I felt like I was walking through a fairytale.

Camping at Honeymoon Pool, Nov 2011
My 2 year old couldn’t do much riding. So my husband and I took turns to go mountain biking and normal cycling (with a child seat on the back of our bike) throughout the trip.

My other two kids (who are 8 and 6) absolutely loved it. Then again, anything with bikes and danger is a big win for them.

As for the actual camping, I really enjoy “roughing it out”. We had a family tent which was large enough for the five of us, but next time we might put the two bigger children in a separate tent, just to give us (and them) a bit extra sleeping room.

Oh and I love the traditions of camping – waking up at dawn, having a cup of hot tea and watching the sun rise, cooking baked beans and bacon over a fire for breakfast… all that good stuff.

I know I say this all the time, but it was the best weekend break in a loooong time!

  • In keeping with my obsession of all things Roman History, I picked up Meditations by Marcus Aurelius... love me some wise, old, humble ramblings! 😆 What a world we live in that we can read the thoughts of one of the world’s greatest leaders/thinkers, written nearly two thousand years ago and see a cracking quote like this:
“The happiness of your life depends upon the quality of your thoughts.” - Marcus Aurelius 💕✨
  • A few new blog posts today! 👉🏼Sharing a bit about my new full time job, what I love about it, what my husband is doing now, how my kids are handling the change. Also sharing my current love of vintage print dresses! Link in bio 💕 #uxdesigner #uxdesign
