What I Wore: The British Museum

January 24, 2017

Topshop Khaki Coat

This is me at The British Museum! My lovely mum and I stood against this white wall and tried to dodge the huge crowd of of visitors, tourists and school kids – which was close to impossible!

I’m showing off my new Double Breasted Coat from Topshop.

Love the colour! So affordable and great quality too.

I wasn’t actually planning to buy a coat during my trip. I have so many at home in Australia.

You see, I didn’t pack a nice, wool coat for my 4 week stay in London, because my sister said I could borrow her coats. She and I are the same size, so it made sense to reduce my luggage weight, which actually just meant I brought 5 pairs of shoes instead of 4.

Anyway, when I found out her only wool coat was a Burberry one – I borrowed it once, wore it for 7 hours, walked around all day doing some shopping and sight seeing, slinging my backpack over my shoulder – I KNEW that I would scuff it up and wear it out at the shoulder (from the constant rubbing of my bag strap).

So I didn’t want to damage her coat, so haha that was my excuse to buy myself a new coat.

Not a Burberry one though!

I’m also wearing a Turtleneck Wool Sweater from Country Road (old season), Uniqlo Heattech Top (lovely and warm!), Frame denim Jeans, Adidas Stan Smiths (on sale at ASOS), and my Rebecca Minkoff Backpack.

Museum Highlight: Iznik Ceramics

January 22, 2017

Iznik Designs from London Museums

One of the highlights of my visit to London were all the Turkish Ceramics and Middle Eastern designs at The Victoria and Albert Museum and The British Museum.

I’ve seen and studied Iznik Ceramics in books before…

But this is the first time I’ve seen ACTUAL Iznik artefacts from the 1550s, up close, with my own eyes, staring at their intricate patterns, their tessellating tile goodness, each teeny-tiny brush stroke, and marvelling at the way the colour puddles at the end of each painted line.

Yeah I got a bit excited.

And yeah I’m a bit embarrassed that I’m just in a London museum and not actually in a mosque in Istanbul, looking at these Iznik patterns, in their natural surroundings.

(There’s a travel goal in that one!)

So I really couldn’t contain myself. My heart was singing and doing cart-wheels all over the place!

I took hundreds of photos and just HAD to share some of my favourites!

Enjoy!

What I Wore: COS and Burberry

January 20, 2017

At the Victoria and Albert Museum

This is me looking like a school girl at the Victoria and Albert Museum, the museum of art and design.

Not so hilarious, because I was acting like one… reading every panel, examining every detail and taking zillions of photos.

That place was AWE-INSPIRING! Loved it so much! We spent hours there!

As for my outfit…

I went shopping on Regent Street the day before and I bought this dress from COS, a Straight Cut Crinkle Dress (on sale too!).

Wearing a BambooBody Scoop Singlet under the dress for extra warmth.

I have my lovely Acne Studios Jensen Booties, which were so comfortable to wear all day.

My Rebecca Minkoff Julian Backpack, just to make myself look even more like a school girl :P

And I borrowed my sister’s Burberry Wool Cashmere Coat, which was flipping amazing.

Tee hee, it’s very cool that we are exactly the same clothes size and shoe size. Too bad we both live on different sides of the world though!

Snapchatting Art History from the National Gallery

January 18, 2017

I went to visit the National Gallery of London, which features Western European art from the 1300 – 1900s. It was a lovely gallery, with lovely rooms and lots of space.

It was my first time there and I pretty much snapchatted a whole art history lesson for my kids to watch haha.

I uploaded something like 20 photos, saying things like… “This painting is by a SUPER DUPER FAMOUS painted called Vincent Van Gogh… it’s worth about $40 million, so be impressed!”

I felt irreverent and so low-brow, but hey, I had to entertain my 7 year old.
National Gallery London Visit 2016

On the other hand, for me…

I had a WONDERFUL time slooooowly browsing through the gallery and taking hundreds of photos. I’m not sure why I took so many photos, though.

Possibly just to capture a little bit of the magic, so I could keep it forever, on my hard drive, and on my blog.

National Gallery London Visit 2016

Delicious details by Dutch still life painter Jan Janz Treck, Vanitas Still Life (1648).

To my boys I said: “It’s about death and the futility of all human ambition. Depression much?”

Self portrait aged 63, by Rembrandt (1669)

To my boys I said: “Very famous Dutch painter.”

National Gallery London Visit 2016

Snow Scene at Argenteil, by Claude Monet (1875).

“Super famous French painter –  Claude Monet. He’s like REALLY FAMOUS yo.”

National Gallery London Visit 2016

The Water Lily Pond, by Claude Monet (1899).

“One of Monet’s famous series of paintings of a lily pond. FAMOUS.”

Bathers at Asnieres, by Georges Seurat (1884).

“This guy was a French post-impressionist. He liked to paint with dots.”

National Gallery London Visit 2016

Bowl of Fruit and Tankard before a Window by Paul Gauguin (1890)

“By a dude named Gauguin. Not so famous. But still significant.”

“You better not be bored yet. Keep scrolling!” I said.

National Gallery London Visit 2016

Sunflowers, by Vincent van Gogh (1888)

“This painting is by a SUPER DUPER FAMOUS painted called Vincent Van Gogh…”

“It’s his most famous painting.”

“It’s worth about $40 million, so be impressed!”

National Gallery London Visit 2016

A Wheatfield, with Cypress by Vincent van Gogh (1889)

“This is my favourite van Gogh. His brush strokes are amazing! He’s a genius!”

And I sent them 5 close up photos too. At different angles.

Seriously, I was in heaven. I could have stayed there all day.

I kept having flashes of scenes and chapters from “The Goldfinch” by Donna Tartt and the whole idea of how seeing a painting feels like visiting an old friend; snatching a glance of a painting again and again, just to feel the buzz it brings to you; and being haunted by a painting for life.

Yes I’m having a fabulous time in London!

What I Wore: Out to Buy Milk and Layering Up

January 16, 2017

London Street Style

When I left Australia, the weather was a glorious 35°C… so yes, I’m a little surprised by the 5°C winter days here in London.

I’m not going to pretend to be a stylish fashion blogger, extravagantly jet-setting around the world, effortlessly transitioning from season to season, country to country, like I was fluent in international living!

I just want to wear my comfiest and warmest clothes, that are practical for what I’m doing and try to look somewhat OK haha.

Here I’m heading out to the shops. I’m going to buy almond milk and to put money onto my Oyster Card (a smart card for using London transport).

On this particular day, it snowed!

I was walking to the bus and I had my first experience of snow falling on my face. Wayhey!

I’m wearing:

4 Layers On Top:

BambooBody Scoop Singlet – Lovely, smooth bamboo fabric. Nice and tight to keep me warm.

BambooBody 3/4 Sleeve Top – Feels lovely on my skin. Fitted but not too tight. Great for layering.

Grana Cashmere Sweater – I love this sweater! Feels amazing and so warm. Use my Grana link for 10% off + free shipping!

Obermeyer Tuscany Jacket – This is my water-proof jacket (for sports/hiking/skiing/everyday wear), which I bought in Mountain Design Australia, a few years ago. I’ve worn it mountain climbing in Scotland, hiking in Tasmania, and I’ve worn it every weekend in Perth in winter while watching my boys play football in the wind and rain! I like its simple / minimal design and it has a fur hood, which makes it look a bit stylish!

It’s been my best practical winter purchase ever! It was a bit expensive (AUD$350) but oh man, it has been worth the money so many times over.

Bottoms Layers:

Frame Le Skinny Jeanne Jeans – Probably not the warmest jeans to wear in winter, as my thighs were probably the coldest part of my body, as they got wet from the rain, snow and wind. But hey they are nice and comfy otherwise.

Acne Pistol Boots – I bought these secondhand off a private seller. I have been stalking these boots for years on eBay, and finally found a lovely girl in Sydney (on a Facebook designer sale group), selling hers in my size at my kind of price (under A$200). They are ridiculously comfortable! I walked around for 5 hours in them!

Other Layers:

Acne Narrow Canada Scarf – a bit of a splurge, but oh my it’s so warm and feels soft and smooth for a 100% wool scarf. Not itchy at all.

Pom Pom Beanie – Just some no-brand, cheap and cheerful beanie from a department store!

Leather Gloves – I bought these in Copenhagen, at the first high-street store I walked into, Pieces.

So after layering up like this for a week, I’ve gotten used to the bulkiness and walking around as if I’m wearing a sumo suit. Our apartment, shops, cafes, museums and buildings all have heating, so I just end up taking most of my layers off. I don’t mind it at all now :)

London: Doing The Tourist Thing

January 14, 2017

London - Big Ben 2016

Hello hello, I’m currently in London and having a grand old time!

I’ve travelled here with my mum and we’re staying with my little sister and her husband, basically waiting for their baby to arrive.

I’m here for 4 weeks and we’re here to help with the new baby. Eeeeek I can’t wait to cuddle a newborn!

Yep so I’m here without my husband and kids. All I can say is, life is really different without kids.

It’s neither better and worse… just different.

London - St Pauls 2016

What have we been up to?

Since we’re waiting for the baby to arrive (any time now!), we’re doing lots of sight-seeing. We’re walking 5 – 6kms a day, stopping for coffee, eating pastries, going into cool bookstores, visiting art galleries, strolling through museums, looking at old buildings, window shopping, eating at lovely restaurants…

We’ve been to the Borough Markets, walked along the Thames River, Tower Bridge, St Paul’s Cathedral. Then we went to the Victoria and Albert Museum, the London Eye, Westminster Bridge, Westminster Abbey, St James Park, Soho, Trafalgar Square, Leicester Square, National Gallery, Hyde Park, Buckingham Palace, The British Museum and more.

We’ve been all over London, seeing all the big sights!

I’ve seen it all before, but I still enjoyed seeing it a second time around and admiring all the beautiful details. I couldn’t stop gawking at Big Ben. It is truly a beautiful building!

In fact I was in awe of ALL the old buildings, streets and architecture. I felt like a kid, with childlike wonder, walking around with my mouth hanging open, gaping with delight!

Part of me thought: Omg really Karen? Have some cool will you? Don’t be so lame. This is all cheesey, touristy stuff. There’s so much more in the world than this. So much more architectural wonder and natural beauty… and you’re excited about Big Ben??

Bah, my inner voice can be such a bitch!

I didn’t care. I deleted her from my inner playlist.

I may be lame, but I’ll never lose my wonder for the world around me. If I can find delight and appreciation from simple details, I’ll always be happy, where ever I am.

Bring on the cheesiness!

Snorkelling at Greens Pool, Walpole

January 7, 2017

Greens Pool, Williams Bay, Walpole

During our holiday, we had such beautiful summer weather that we spent most days at the beach!

One of our favourite spots in the Walpole and Denmark area is Greens Pool, in the Williams Bay National Park. Heck, the place is so beautiful, I think it is everyone’s favourite spot.

We’ve been there a few times to hang out and swim, but this time we wanted to do something different. We wanted to go snorkelling with the kids.

We’ve taken them a few times in the past. But they’ve never really liked it. They always get cold really quickly (within 10 minutes!) and then they spend the rest of the day shivering under a towel on the beach.

So this time we bought them some wetsuits hoping they’d have a better time in the water (these are actually called Spring Suits which I bought for $50 each).

Snorkelling at Green Pool, Walpole

Unfortunately the ocean was SO COLD they only lasted about 30 minutes in the water.

(It was the Southern Ocean after all, between Australia and Antartica!)

Plus there wasn’t that much to see underwater. A few fish and lots of sand and seaweed.

As for me, I waded into the water and – yep – even I was surprised by how cold the water was.

I was really, really, REALLY reluctant to put on my wetsuit and go for a snorkel too.

I had so many reasons not to do it: the water was bloody freezing, the kids were already out of the water and wrapped up in their towels, there was no coral to see, I’ve seen seaweed before, I was feeling hungry, it was almost lunch time and I’d have to help make some sandwiches, I didn’t have my fins, mask or snorkel, I’d have to borrow the kid’s set, the beach and sand was so lovely and warm, PLUS I haven’t worn my wetsuit in about 8 years… maybe it didn’t fit me anymore, as neoprene tends to shrink and harden when not used often.

Snorkelling at Green Pool, Walpole

But in the end, I thought OMG KAREN, WILL YOU JUST LIVE A LITTLE?!

So I grabbed my wetsuit and I literally had to squeeze myself into it.

It was soooooooo tight. When I grabbed a bunch of fabric at my leg and pulled, I broke two fingernails, because that’s how hard I had to grip and pull! I got a bit sweaty and flustered trying to put it on, it felt like it was suffocating me and I was getting a bit claustrophobic and dizzy. My collar was so tight on my neck that it felt like there were fingers squeezing at my throat.

I don’t mean to be so dramatic, but it was pretty uncomfortable and I was about to give up.

Greens Pool, Williams Bay, Walpole

But the water was calling me, so I grabbed a mask and jumped in without much thought.

Icy water rushed into my suit and I squealed EEEEEEEEPPPPPPPPP!

But oh my gosh! I INSTANTLY LOVED IT!

My suit made me very buoyant, it kept me super warm, it seemed to stretch in the water and I didn’t feel suffocated at all, I felt like I was wrapped up with a soft, fleecy tracksuit (in terms of warmth and comfort) and I ended up swimming in the ocean for about 2 hours that day – which is just unheard of for me.

I bobbed up and down in the water and I wanted to burst from happiness. I floated on my back and looked up to the sky, and every thing around me was blue blue blue, aqua blue, ocean blue, dark blue, green blue, sky blue, light blue, blue blue blue. It was just such a thrilling experience for me.

My main thought was, I have to do more stuff like this.

My husband jumped in too.

We started snorkelling around some big rocks, which had a strong current and we drifted through beautiful little pools. We were like silly kids, gleefully playing, laughing and duck diving to pick things up from the bottom.

Our kids were up on the rocks, watching us and waving to us.

Later on, my boys told me that they wished they weren’t so cold and wished they had jumped in and joined us too. I promised to buy them thicker wetsuits next time.

Snorkelling at Green Pool, Walpole

So this is was taken the next day. We went to another beach and I went through the whole drama of putting on my wetsuit and breaking my nails.

Again I spent about 2-3 hours in the water.

And again, I loved every minute of it!

Sean Snorkelling

By our second snorkelling experience (this time in warmer and shallower waters) my boys decided that they loved snorkelling and are keen to do more!

Yay, I guess the spring suits worked after all :)

Mirrored Forests

January 6, 2017

Monastery Jetty, Walpole

As I leaned out towards the front of the boat to snap this photo, I actually remembered taking a very similar photos 4 years ago.

We were here, on the Frankland River in 2013, with all three of my boys, with my same friends, with their same kids, in their same boat.

I remembered gliding through the mirrored water, absolutely in awe of the view.

I remembered the reflection of the trees stretching both high into the sky above us, and down below into the inky darkness of the water. I remembered the olive green trees and the bright blue sky.

I asked my kids whether they remembered doing any of this four years ago; my oldest boy said he remembered a little bit, my second and youngest boys said they couldn’t remember anything.

Hmph, it made me a little annoyed, because what’s the point of doing all this cool stuff with the kids when they can’t remember any of it?!

So I started to point out all the meticulous details, in hope that it will be etched into their brains forever. LOOK at the texture of the still water compared to the rippled water! LOOK at the gradient of the blue sky! LOOK at the fallen branches half in the water! LOOK at the different greens in the leaves!

And even though I was soaking in everything for the second time, I still had my breath taken away by it all.

My Fashion Week Interrupted (By Camping on a Cow Farm)

September 26, 2016

During my week of fashion shows, I took 24 hours off to go camping with my family!

The plan was to stay on a cow farm.

With a forecast of thunderstorms, rain and an overnight temperature of 3 degrees.

How did I manage to be convinced of this???

Haha well, we had already committed to it.

Plus we were going to stay at a friend’s farm and join 10 (maybe 12) other families and couples.

We didn’t want to miss out!

Camping in Harvery

It turned out that the whole experience was pretty luxurious…

(Except the bit where I had to sleep in a tent, in a thunderstorm.)

THE VIEW was amazing!!

We were up high in the landscape; and even though we were 20kms inland, we could see the sun setting over the glittering ocean. It was so pretty.

Our friends also had a lovely farm house, with a big fireplace. They had meats roasting on a spit. Lots of room for the kids to play. They had working toilets, hot showers and hey, they even had a dishwasher. Life was good.

Camping in Harvery

The next morning, we had gorgeous sunshine.

The fields sparkled with bright flowers and juicy grass.

The hills were alive with the sounds of mooing cows.

Camping in Harvery

We headed off for a walk to see the cows and horses.

Now that’s a sight I won’t forget. A bunch of happy horses surrounded by happy children, surrounded by a field of yellow daisies, surrounded by a forest of eucalyptus trees.

Camping in Harvery

The whole 24 hours was just magical.

It certainly was a huge change of scene for me.

Really want to thank our friends G & S for the kind invitation. (Also want to thank my husband for setting up and taking down our tents, and packing and unpacking the car.)

After lunch we headed home.

And what did I do? I washed my hair, dolled myself up, wolfed down some dinner and I drove off to my last 2 fashion shows for the year – haha!

Holiday in Scotland – Standing Stones

September 12, 2016

Holiday in Scotland 2016 - Standing Stone

When we were visiting Scotland, our family did quite a few walks and hikes. We climbed up mountains and cliffs, went to look for castles and waterfalls, we walked by the lochs and old ruins.

We also went looking for standing stones and stone circles!

Holiday in Scotland 2016 - Standing Stone

These were not particularly famous standing stones in Scotland. We just went to look at them because they were marked on a tourist map, near to where we were staying.

In all honesty, they were a bit underwhelming.

They weren’t perched on a cliff. They weren’t on top of a hill. They weren’t surrounded by a pretty forest. There was no information board explaining the history of the stones.

They just looked like some medium-sized rocks in a farmer’s sheep paddock.

(Maybe the local sheep farmer used a bulldozer to make a circle of rocks to attract tourist like us??)

They weren’t exactly the best example of stone circles for our kids to see.

NONETHELESS, we discussed their possible age, mythology, history and local folklore around the stones – and if we used our imagination, it was kind of amazing to think what they could have meant and how long they could have been there.

Holiday in Scotland 2016 - Stone Circle

Now before I left for Scotland, a few of my girlfriends alerted me to the “Outlander Phenomenon”.

There is a book series called “Outlander” by Diana Gabaldon, about a 20th century nurse who, while holidaying in Scotland, touches a standing stone and gets transported back in time to 18th century Scotland, where she meets a rugged Scottish hunk and falls in love. It’s a historical fiction / romance / adventure type novel – which I read in 2001!

What I didn’t know was… it was turned into a TV series and everyone is quick to describe it to me in five words: Sexy. Erotic. Hot, Scottish guys.

Apparently the tv series is rather sexy… and there’s a lot of sex in it.

And apparently it’s been SO popular, that you can now go on “Outlander Tours of Scotland”, see some of the Scottish Highland locations from the novel and you know, touch some erect, standing stones ha!

So what do you know, I was going to some of those places.

With all that in mind, (and not having seen the TV series), I sent some totally innocent photos of ME TOUCHING A STANDING STONE to my girlfriends, which made them hoot and snort with laughter.

Ah, what are girlfriends for?!

(No one seems to know the exact purpose or function of a standing stone, so if they ever find out and it’s something sacred, I do apologise for making light of the whole situation!)

  • Pearls, always ✨🐚 @thepeachbox #thepeachbox #lulapearlcollection
  • Hello to Australia’s largest cheese display fridge @cheesecathedral! 🧀💕We celebrated the launch of @europeanfoods_au new Marketplace wholesale outlet with the crew from @wagoodfoodguide and yummy eats by @chefvalvasori! Amazing cheese, chocolate, food, coffee and gourmet grazing table - I was in heaven!!
  • Celebrating Friday with a new blog post! About a year ago, I made a plan to look for a pair of sustainable, earth-friendly and ethically produced jeans, fall in love with them... then buy them in ALL colours. 👖💕 I found a pair from @Everlane for AUD$103 - and yep, I bought them in blue, white, black and grey. Head over to my blog for my review and pics 💕☺️✨
  • Few new blog posts, link in bio! My workplace dress code is quite casual and relaxed... but I like to wear my bold, colourful dresses, because omg I need to wear my nice clothes somewhere!?! 🙈✨
  • Well hello there! Got a new post up on my blog about using a dress hire service, now that I’m working in a different industry (tech, not fashion!), going to less events and trying to spend my fashion budget on more sustainable fashion choices.
Also...Trying to kick off the flu. Trying to exercise more. Trying to spend smarter. And trying to resist all the office treats! 🍩🎂🍪😆✨
  • In keeping with my obsession of all things Roman History, I picked up Meditations by Marcus Aurelius... love me some wise, old, humble ramblings! 😆 What a world we live in that we can read the thoughts of one of the world’s greatest leaders/thinkers, written nearly two thousand years ago and see a cracking quote like this:
“The happiness of your life depends upon the quality of your thoughts.” - Marcus Aurelius 💕✨
  • A few new blog posts today! 👉🏼Sharing a bit about my new full time job, what I love about it, what my husband is doing now, how my kids are handling the change. Also sharing my current love of vintage print dresses! Link in bio 💕 #uxdesigner #uxdesign
