Day 3 in Melbourne: Shopping in Fitzroy

October 8, 2008

Again I woke up bright and early, and this time I decided to try breakfast in bed at The Grand. Ooh it was glorious! I’ve never had breakfast in bed in a hotel, and hehe it was such a treat.

Breakfast in bed at The Grand Hotel, Melbourne

Today I took a tram over to the highly recommended Fitzroy area – in particular Brunswick Street, Smith Street and Gertrude Street. (So many of my readers said I HAVE to go there! Thanks guys!)

If you’re visiting Melbourne, I highly recommend you grab some Grid Urban Maps, which can be found in hotel lobbies, boutiques, cafes. They are free, pocket sized, and cover all shopping and tourist precincts. I would have been lost without them!

Brunswick Street, Fitzroy

I really enjoyed Brunswick Street. It was bursting with boutiques, homewares shops, groovy cafes, vintage shops, discount outlets. There is so much to see! Some parts were upmarket and stylish, but it all had a very cool, laid-back, arty, grungy, independent vibe.

And I adored Smith Street, which runs parallel to Brunswick St. It was a melting pot of sights, smells and textures. I loved the way there were dodgy looking internet cafes next to a Vietnamese butcher, next to super stylish lighting shop, next to a Lebanese bakery, next to a nursery, independent designer jewellery shop, and a bustling cafe. The variety is quite an experience!

Unlike the city, where all the shops are crammed closely together, Fitzroy is a lot more spread out. I found that the fashion boutiques are dotted all over the place, so make sure you wear good walking shoes because you have to do a lot of walking. I recommend that you dedicate 3-4 hours to cover the place. Which is fine, because there are heaps of places to stop for a delicious snack and coffee.

Shop Sui

There are a few very cool and quirky little shops on Gertrude Street. Definitely worth checking out.

One in particular is Shop Sui. Run by a very cool lady, Sylvia, her shop specialises in a deliciously diverse range of products – from retro Astroboy posters, to funky leather handbags, to gorgeous handmade baby hats, to designer stationery products, to cushions, jewellery, stuff toys and much more! You must check it out!

I loved the way her shop was set up, and I spent ages browsing through every nook and cranny! I bought some gifts for my sons too.

Lady Melbourne

Lastly I headed over to a great little cafe, Cavallero, to meet up with the always stylish, Lady Melbourne.

I love her site, her sense of style, self portraits and photographic styling!

It was such a pleasure to meet over a cup of tea, chatting about fashion, blogging, clothes, shopping, Melbourne, giggling over the quirks of fashion blogging and fashion photography.

All up I spent about 6 hours on my feet. Walking, meeting people, looking at shops, taking photos, taking notes.

That evening, I did more walking. I met up with a good friend for dinner at Trotters Cafe on Lygon Street. Had yummy seafood pasta and apple crumble. Then strolled around until my feet couldn’t take it any more!

Day 2 in Melbourne: Shopping in Melbourne City

October 7, 2008

I woke up bright and early in the morning and skipped downstairs for an indulgent hot breakfast. It was absolutely delicious, especially because I didn’t have to make it myself!

The Grand Hotel, Melbourne

I took a walk around the lovely grounds of The Grand, looking for a nice spot to read the morning newspaper. Despite the austere architecture of the hotel as seen from the front, there were lots of pretty and stylish touches hidden within the building. This was my favourite, the central courtyard.

The Grand Hotel, Melbourne

Today I checked out Melbourne City as a fashion and shopping experience.

Over the next few days I’ll be visiting several famous shopping districts in Melbourne. At the end of my trip I’ll compile them into one post, Places to Shop in Melbourne – describing and featuring them all, including all the must visit shops!

I’ve spent heaps of time researching, asking around, gathering local knowledge, and creating a 4-day tour plan for myself so I can experience it all personally.

I must give a big shout out to Nadya who helped me tremendously in my preparation! She was absolutely wonderful and generous in sharing her shopping knowledge with me. She literally listed dozens of streets and districts and – off the top of her head – knew exactly which brands and boutiques could be found on each street!

Degraves Street, Melbourne

Anyway, the perfect start to experiencing the classic Melbourne vibe is on Degraves Street, a little laneway between Finders Street and Flinders Lane (near the iconic Flinders Street Station).

Melbourne is famous for it’s wonderful, old architecture and fabulous lane ways. Degraves Street and next to it, Centre Place, definitely capture the essence of Melbourne Culture, with people spilling out of cafes, tables on the cobblestone road, the smell of excellent coffee and piping hot breads, colourful boutiques with gorgeous wallpapers, quirky little Italian shops, amazing wall art… I loved it!

I spent the whole day walking around the CBD! From Gucci to Chinese supermarkets. There was so much variety and I had a blast discovering it all! Argh, my feet are so sore!

The Cat's Meow

Being me, I was specifically looking to find a boutique in the CBD that was uniquely Melbourne – something a bit quirky, arty, grass roots and not main-stream.

The Cat’s Meow is a boutique underneath Degraves St, in a tunnel called Campbell Arcade, which leads to Flinders St Station. I must admit, the tunnel was pretty dodgy, it was very old and run down. But there were several very cool small shops down there. I spent ages checking them out, and I was very tempted to buy stuff, so it’s definitely worth a look.

I met up with the women behind the boutique, Karen and Kylie, and had the nicest chat to them about their shop. Both are fashion designers with their own labels, who started the shop in 2002. It caters to women who are seeking original, everyday, alternative high-end labels and garments, most in “real women” sizes.

The stuff that caught my eye: Really nice tops from Dogstar, lovely print dresses from Surface Art, and great tshirt prints by Hamb and Non-Fiction. I bought a little handmade purse with a gorgeous print on it (to store some lip gloss and other small things floating around my handbag).

I really enjoyed being in their shop! It had a very nice, unpretentious, friendly, warm and “homegrown and proud of it” feel about it.

Holiday Moment 2008: Going Bush

August 29, 2008

Holiday Moment 2008 - Going Bush

Last week we were actually away on a little family holiday. We took a road trip up north to visit my husband’s family. They have a large property which is simply beautiful this time of the year.

We spent most of the time outdoors – helping with the yard work, fixing things, making bonfires, visiting the beach, taking walks. It was incredibly relaxing and refreshing. I didn’t touch a computer once!

This is a little barbecue fire we made out of some old bricks and a discarded grill we found. We walked to the cute country town shops. We bought sausages, eggs, onions and buns. We made a little fire with sticks we gathered. And we made the most delicious hotdogs ever!

(If you look close enough, you might see our names on the sides of the barbecue, scrawled with the burnt end of a stick.)

Soon Lee Fashion Boutique and Haji Lane

July 11, 2008

During my recent trip to Singapore, I had a list of “MUST SEE” boutiques and fashion designers compiled from dozens of personal recommendations, suggestions and my own online research. But I only had time to do about half of them. Argh!

On the top of my list was Soon Lee, in Haji Lane.

I was given lots of mixed opinions as people described the shopping at Haji Lane. I got the impression that it was VERY DIFFERENT to the high-end, designer-brand, super-shiny boutiques in Singapore’s Orchard District.

One of the results of mass production and globalisation is the rise of the conventional shopping mall. These shopping experiences are predictable, and pretty much the same, whether you’re in Perth, Singapore or London.

Part of my interest and take on fashion, is to showcase different, unique and local shopping experiences – so I was very curious to take a look at Haji Lane for myself.

Oh how I loved it!

Haji Lane, Singapore

Walking down Haji Lane, you would probably think you arrived at the wrong place for a fashion experience. The lane is long and narrow. There is the occasional piece of rubbish lying around, there are rickshaws (yes, a pedal powered taxi with a charming, old, toothless man!) and rubbish bins are parked next to tiny, two-stroke vans and motorcycles.

Old shop houses run the length of the shopping lane – some shops have vines growing up the building, with aged, oriental murals flaking off the walls. Some have uber modern glass walls, with brushed, stainless steel fittings and amazingly designed wall patterns. The place is crammed with absolutely unique shops and cafes.

Haji Lane, Singapore

Singapore is a sophisticated, developed, modern and a truly global city. But nearby in Arab Street, you can literally see, feel, smell and taste that Singapore has been a cross roads of international trade and cultural exchange for centuries.

I loved all the vibrant colours, deep textures, exotic smells, the mix of old and new, the signs of oriental and global influence. It was incredible.

Soon Lee Boutique, Haji Lane, Singapore

At Soon Lee, I was welcomed by its co-owner, Sharon Cher. I adore her blog, www.ishopsoonlee.blogspot.com, so I was keen to meet the woman behind the words. I was very fortunate that she was able to afford some time to chat over coffee!

She is one smart woman. Passionate, intelligent, brave, stylish, driven – exactly the kind of person that makes fashion exciting!

She explained the short fashion history of Haji Lane, and the even shorter background of Soon Lee. Soon Lee means “plain sailing” – a wonderfully calming reference, and indeed, both the boutique and Haji Lane is a long way from the rushed pace of Orchard Road’s towering, multilevel shopping centres.

soonlee01Soon Lee Boutique, Haji Lane, Singapore

Her shop is wonderful. Eclectic, busy, over-flowing with delicious bits and pieces and designed goodies – clothes, jewellery, accessories, hats, belts, sun glasses, homewares.

Soon Lee
56 Haji Lane, Level 2, Singapore.
Open everyday from 2pm-8pm.
Phone: (65)6297-0198

You get the feeling that Haji Lane oozes a new kind of quiet, creative confidence in Singapore, still fresh and exciting.

I can’t wait to go back and have a whole afternoon or evening to drift from one boutique to another – which are all within steps of one another. Haji Lane is worth visiting just to experience Arab Street and its surrounds too, and the price of everything seem very affordable.

Most boutiques in Haji Lane only open their doors from around 2.00pm, and are still open till around 9 -10 pm. I’ve been told that the best time to visit is 4pm on a weekday.

Get there by:

Taxi – I had to explain to our taxi driver that Haji Lane is parallel to Arab Street, between North Bridge Road and Beach Road, then he had no problem. I used this google map.

Or take the MRT East-West line train to Bugis station and walk for 10 minutes.

Enjoy!

Doing The Karen Cheng – Singapore Red Cross Charity Event

Doing The Karen Cheng in Singapore - Charity Event

The “DTKC Super-babes” are looking damn fine! I am wearing a dress from our major sponsor, online boutique FashionJunkee.com.

12 days ago I had this crazy idea to take something that was a bit silly, and turn it into something significant.

In a matter of days, the Doing The Karen Cheng Singapore Red Cross Charity Event caused a huge wave of momentum and excitement. We had multiple sponsors, interviews with 3 major newspapers, I was invited to chat on radio, magazine and newspapers wanted to cover the event, heaps of people wanted to help and participate! I was truly overwhelmed by all the support.

The event was a success. We had over a hundred of people turn up, and we raised approximately $2000 in 2 hours! Woohoo!

Doing The Karen Cheng in Singapore - Charity Event

I was thrilled to see so many girls and guys dressed up to the max and joining in the fun! I’m so glad everyone stayed for drinks, mingled, chatted, and took more photos! I chatted with heaps of people and would have loved to talk MORE, but I was slowly losing my voice over the course of the event.

All my photos and professional photos are at the Doing The Karen Cheng Facebook Group.

Please remember to upload your own photos, feel free to browse them all, and please help me tag people.

The very charming and very popular Malaysian blogger Kenny Sia turned up and was more than happy to be the centre of attention.

Doing The Karen Cheng in Singapore - Charity Event

A big thanks to May (centre) from Carrey Hill Events Management – she looked into every detail, she fixed every problem, she took care of everything, she was so organised, enthusiastic, reliable and creative! She was incredible! And she did it all for charity! Thanks so much May, her crew and Carrey Hill.

We had a professional photographer take some photos for the event, the award-winning Ivan Loh (left) of Pigs Can Fly. He was amazing too – fantastic to work with, full of great ideas, amazing results, lovely personality, professional but fun, hard working, very determined to get that perfect shot, and he even dropped off the CD the next morning! Thanks Ivan, you’re too kind.

Of course, I need to thank the kind folk from The Singapore Red Cross, who were incredibly supportive! Thanks Kelly!
Romadas Arts kindly donated their printing services and materials for the event. They made up some great posters and an amazing banner, all for free! And Nuffnang Blog Advertising Community kindly donated colour printing services to all of the participants!

Lastly, I want to thank the gorgeous girls who came a bit earlier to the event to help with photos, and became the “DTKC Super-babes”. You guys looked amazing!! Thanks to Hui Wen, Mel, Jacqueline, Sheena, Michelle, Karen, Nicole, Norshahira, Tricia, and Kelly. There’s an excellent pic of us in today’s MY PAPER (8 July 2008). Please let me know if I have forgotten someone!

Also thanks to the Fashionation girls, Dottie and Stephie, and also Sharon from Soon Lee at Haji Lane, for all their excellent advice. And, I have to mention my cousin Calvin Cheng, who made some very important conections for us so this could all happen.

Doing The Karen Cheng in Singapore - Charity Event

Near the end of the event, I was requested to “Do The Karen Cheng” with a dog with a blog. I thought it was such a funny and cute idea. So we moved the mirror, brought the whole party outside and took some very cool photos of Kingsley the blogging dog.

Birthday Drinks at the Fashion Bar

July 5, 2008

Birthday Drinks at the Fashion Bar

I am extremely grateful to the Fashion Bar – an uber cool and very gorgeous bar in Clarke Quay. They hosted and sponsored my 30th Birthday Drinks while I was in Singapore.

We started very early compared to the Fashion Bar’s usual crowd. The lush interior design was amazing and gave the event such an opulent, romantic, sexy, girly atmosphere! I loved it!

Birthday Drinks at the Fashion BarWe met Randy the manager, who was absolutely lovely! He made everything run smoothly and gave us 8 bottles of wine.

I had invited people who I knew only from blogging or by email, so it was very exciting to meet so many of them face to face!

It was a very mixed crowd – some old friends, some family, some media people, some fashion designers, some bloggers, and some readers. It was great, and I heard so many funny and interesting stories, and it was wonderful to see people who didn’t know each other, making new connections.

Birthday Drinks at the Fashion Bar

Michelle and Pam (the girls from Style Damsel) with Andrew and myself.

After five hours in the Fashion Bar, and after two hard days of reviewing Singaporean fashion designers and being interviewed by Singapore’s media, I was ready for bed.

My voice was so sore, and very husky. Plus I had to get my beauty sleep for the Red Cross Fundraiser on Saturday afternoon!

Ahhh! Singapore!

July 4, 2008

So I’m back in Singapore after six years, and I feels so good!

I love the heat, I love the food, I love the shopping!

I arrived on Thursday 4am, and it’s been a crazy whirlwind of events, meetings, interviews, shopping and eating. It’s been so much fun! My FashionJunkee dress has arrived. I’ve been talking non-stop, and lo and behold my voice has turned husky again.

Which is hilarious, because I was on Power 98 FM this morning. My first time on radio!

Joe Augustin and the gang were talking to me about “Doing The Karen Cheng”, and raising funds for the Singapore Red Cross.

If you want more information about the Facebook Group and the Event, please scroll down and read my previous post!

(Btw, it’s my birthday today!! I’m 30 and it feels awesome!!!)

Our Teeny Tiny Day Trip

April 23, 2008

After our last exceedingly stressful holiday, we decided to take a very, very simple and small trip to Rockingham.

Rockingham has a nice stretch of beach, lots of parks and playgrounds, a strip of cafes, a shopping centre, some nice walking trails, lookouts and lovely coastal views – it’s small and simple, and it’s only 30 minutes out of town.

Our objective for this trip was : hang out at a beach and sit in a cafe.

Day Trip To Rockingham 08

^ We arrived and ate lunch at a random cafe. As I was taking the photo, I said coolly, “Sean. I’d like you to put down that knife, right now.” Look at that hilarious expression on his face!

Day Trip To ^ Rockingham 08 Day Trip To ^ Rockingham 08

^ We took a little drive along the coast. Walked along some bush tracks, found some look outs.

Day Trip To Rockingham 08

We found a sheltered beach. The water was so still. The kids hopped about in the rock pools. I grimaced at the fact that the boys had no shoes on, but hey I did the same when I was a kid.

Day Trip To Rockingham 08

^ I sat in the shade and rearranged shells on the beach. Very therapeutic.

Day Trip To Rockingham 08

^ The boys went for a walk and found ingredients for Poh Poh’s (grandma) Chinese soups.

Day Trip To Rockingham 08

^ They also found a HUGE bundle of rope, which they dragged back to show me. “We found some treasure!”

Day Trip To Rockingham 08

^ My husband found a piece of wood, tangled amongst the seaweed. I suggested that he should tie some of the rope on it, and make a wake board thing.

And lo and behold, we all had the most glorious day trip ever!!

About Perth, Western Australia

January 16, 2008

Perth, Western Australia

I get lots of emails and questions about where I live. So I thought I’d write up a quick overview of what it is like to live in Perth, Western Australia.

Some facts and figures are from recent newspaper reports, some are off the internet (Lonely Planet and WA Tourism), some are just from my own experience.

1. Perth has a population of 1.5million. The whole city and metropolitan area is very flat and spread out, thus visitors are often struck by all the BIG WIDE OPEN SPACES.

2. Perth is a very pretty city, with lots of gorgeous views. Perth’s main aspect is the Swan River. It weaves from the Port of Fremantle, alongside the City Centre, then into the hills.

3. Perth also has great beaches. Clean sand and water. No pollution. Parking is free. Sunsets over the Indian Ocean are spectacular.

4. The Perth atmosphere is generally very relaxed and laid back. There is none of the big city crowds, big city density, big city rushing-around attitudes and crazy traffic jams.

5. There is no INTENSE MEDIA SATURATION in Perth. For example in larger cities, if a blockbuster movie was being released, there would be advertising EVERYWHERE. On the tv, radio, newspapers, on buses, bus stops, posters, digital projections, people handing out pamphlets, merchandise in fast food outlets, people will be talking about it in the streets, offices, cafes – there would be no escape, no quiet, no peace away from the relentless noise of the media.

In addition to that, it’s more probable that TWO blockbuster movies were being released, a huge US music act, a famous ballet performance, some Broadway musical, a charity concert, a Japanese car expo and an European fashion show – ALL fighting for the SAME media attention and it’s JUST ALL IN YOUR FACE EVERY TWO SECONDS AND THERE’S JUST SO MUCH STRESS AND PRESSURE TO KEEP UP.

But in Perth, you can pretty much spend a whole week being out and about having a great time, and not be bothered by any in-your-face-media.

So I think that’s what people mean by, “Perth is very quiet”.

6. In terms of standard of living, the average price of a 4 bedroom x 2 bathroom house in Perth is (officially) $600,000. If you don’t care much for living in $1.2M house by the river, then a 4×2 in the suburbs will probably set you back $500,000 (plus additional $20,700 in stamp duty).

7. Annual cost for my kid to attend a reputable public school = $80.

8. Average cost to see a doctor = $55 per visit

9. Average cost for health insurance (for a family of 4) = $100 per month

10. Average cost for a dental check up and clean = $120

11. Average cost for child care = $50 per day (I think)

12. Average cost for a 2 year old, small sized car = $12,000 (I think)

13. Average temperature in summer is about 29°C (84.2°F)
The hottest it gets is around 40°C (104°F)

14. Average temperature in winter is about 18°C (64.4 °F)
The coldest it can get during the day is around 9°C (48.2 °F)

15. Because everything is so spread out, you pretty much need a car or some form of transport if you want to get around. If you live near the city, you can probably get away with being carless, as public transport is pretty good there. But if you live in the suburbs, catching a bus to the local shops is quite inconvenient.

16. The bulk of the Perth population live in the metro area. And if you work in the city centre, commuting to work might take [at most] 45 minutes one way in heavy traffic. With the new train line, I’ve heard it has cut 20 minutes off commute time.

17. For MOST people who work an office job, hours are usually 8am – 5pm.

18. Perth is extremely multicultural. I believe all the cultures are better integrated into mainstream society, as there are no large ghettos or racial precincts.

19. As for racism, there will always be a drunken idiot with a loud mouth anywhere in the world. I have lived in Perth for 19 years and I’ve never been racially harassed where I felt threatened.

20. At the moment Perth is going through an economic boom – mainly because of the our exploding oil and gas industry. Work is everywhere. Money is being poured into the state. People are working, spending and eating out more than ever.

21. As a result of this, I feel our hospitality and services industry is feeling the strain. Perth used to have a glowing reputation for friendly service. But everyone is slowly becoming more over-worked and less likely to smile and be exceptionally warm.

But having said that, I wouldn’t blame them. I too would rather go for a bike ride, swim at the beach, have an outdoor dinner party with friends, than to be working late!

Another Cool Thing About Camping

August 31, 2007

Echidna spikes

There were so many wonderful and unplanned moments during our holiday – stuff that really made the holiday all seem worth it.

Callum posing with Mr EchidnaWe stumbled across various wild Australian animals – kangaroos, emus, lizards, sea eagles, and an echidna! A huge one! In the wild! They’re a weird version of a porcupine, and cousin to the platypus, the only kind of egg-laying mammals. The kids were completely amazed.

We spent a significant portion of the trip telling our kids everything we knew about everything in the world – why kangaroos have pouches. Where sea eagles build nests. Why some lizards run on four feet and some on two. Which sea creatures are poisonous and why. Why shallow water is warmer than deep. Stuff that made us feel like really cool parents.

  • Pearls, always ✨🐚 @thepeachbox #thepeachbox #lulapearlcollection
  • Hello to Australia’s largest cheese display fridge @cheesecathedral! 🧀💕We celebrated the launch of @europeanfoods_au new Marketplace wholesale outlet with the crew from @wagoodfoodguide and yummy eats by @chefvalvasori! Amazing cheese, chocolate, food, coffee and gourmet grazing table - I was in heaven!!
  • Celebrating Friday with a new blog post! About a year ago, I made a plan to look for a pair of sustainable, earth-friendly and ethically produced jeans, fall in love with them... then buy them in ALL colours. 👖💕 I found a pair from @Everlane for AUD$103 - and yep, I bought them in blue, white, black and grey. Head over to my blog for my review and pics 💕☺️✨
  • Few new blog posts, link in bio! My workplace dress code is quite casual and relaxed... but I like to wear my bold, colourful dresses, because omg I need to wear my nice clothes somewhere!?! 🙈✨
  • Well hello there! Got a new post up on my blog about using a dress hire service, now that I’m working in a different industry (tech, not fashion!), going to less events and trying to spend my fashion budget on more sustainable fashion choices.
Also...Trying to kick off the flu. Trying to exercise more. Trying to spend smarter. And trying to resist all the office treats! 🍩🎂🍪😆✨
  • In keeping with my obsession of all things Roman History, I picked up Meditations by Marcus Aurelius... love me some wise, old, humble ramblings! 😆 What a world we live in that we can read the thoughts of one of the world’s greatest leaders/thinkers, written nearly two thousand years ago and see a cracking quote like this:
“The happiness of your life depends upon the quality of your thoughts.” - Marcus Aurelius 💕✨
  • A few new blog posts today! 👉🏼Sharing a bit about my new full time job, what I love about it, what my husband is doing now, how my kids are handling the change. Also sharing my current love of vintage print dresses! Link in bio 💕 #uxdesigner #uxdesign
