Figs and Happy Bok Choy

March 17, 2013

Here are a weekend few snaps from my garden.

Figs

My figs are looking a bit small this year, but they taste incredible!

They are so sweet and luscious, that every time I tear one open to take a bite, I stare into the tangled red flesh… and marvel that they were created from water, sunlight and a bit of cow poo.

Last year, all my figs were eaten by rats. But this year, the rats seemed to have kept away. Probably because they are feasting on my grapefruits, and my neighbour’s mangoes!

Happy Bok Choy

And remember how I almost killed my baby bok choy seedlings? How dried up, withered and dead they looked?!

Well I’ve managed to nurse them back to health. Look at them now!

They look so so happy! They look like they’re singing!

Ah, it puts a big smile on my face.

Have a lovely weekend everyone!

How’s the air up there?

February 4, 2013

We have a new toy in our backyard – an old trampoline!

My parents decided they wanted to get rid of their old, discarded trampoline, which was over 25 years old. And we thought our kids might like it.

So we nabbed it, took it apart, loaded it into the back of a trailer and brought it home.

However, it needed a good clean.

So we threw all three children onto it, gave them a scrubbing brush each and a bucket of soapy water!

Personally I thought it was a recipe for disaster. But they cleaned and bounced with such abandoned thrill and joy!

Our New Old Trampoline

I love this photo of one of my sons – happily cleaning away- totally oblivious that his movements were making the bucket tip over dangerously and with each bounce, it slowly “walked” towards him. It was like watching a cartoon.

And of course there was a water fight and foam party at the end of all this cleaning business.

The funny thing is… this trampoline was our trampoline when we lived on Christmas Island.

I remember being 9 years old and playing on that thing with my brother, sister, and neighbours.

I remember the HOURS we spent bouncing, climbing up and down, sitting on the edge, waiting for my turn. I remember all the silly bouncing games that we used to make up, all our funny jumping moves, and pretend wrestling matches and so much more. Ah such good times :)

Anyway I was very pleased to see them enjoy it so much.

My 7 year old said, “Jumping is the BEST feeling in he world. It’s like you’re flying in the air or floating in space!”

Our Mango Tango

February 3, 2013

mango_neighbour

Our neighbour has two big mango trees growing along the other side of our back fence.

He usually cuts the trees back and keeps them neat and tidy, by trimming any over-hanging branches.

But this year, he seems to have let them grow a bit wild.

So much so, I have counted at least 50 little green mangoes, that are hanging and drooping over our fence, into our garden.

In Australia, if you have something growing over the fence into YOUR property, you are allowed to cut it. It’s technically YOURS.

So that means… these mangoes are technically OURS. Right?

The biggest problem is… our back neighbour doesn’t really like us very much. In fact, I don’t think he likes anyone very much. We don’t see him very much. When we do, he can get a bit grouchy. And sometimes he can be unpleasantly bossy. But who knows what situation he’s in.

We try to be friendly. We try to stop our children from screaming and shouting in the backyard when they play. And most of all, we try not to piss him off too much.

Which brings me to the question… Should we steal his mangoes??

Or rather, OUR mangoes??

Hmm. Tricky one.

My kids and I are still tossing around ideas. But it looks like we might… pluck the mangoes when they are ripe, pop them into a fruit box, then walk around the block and deliver them back to him, at his door.

Aren’t we nice? :P

Say Hello To My New Lamp

January 24, 2013

For months, I’ve been trying to find a table lamp for my house, so I can light up a particularly dark corner of my living room.

And at last, I found this very pretty (and well priced) lamp from Freedom – it’s perfect for my little table.

lamp-freedom01

I really like the shape of the lamp, size of the lampshade, the pattern on the base, and how the glaze-wash over the ceramic is messy and puddled a bit here and there.

Oh and it matches my paintings. I painted about 12 abstract landscapes (oil paint on stretched canvas) in 2007, when I was part of a group art exhibition. I managed to sell some, but the rest are not for sale. I can’t part with the remaining few. Instead they are dotted all around my house :)

lamp-freedom02

This painting is actually 1 of 4 square canvases (a quadtych?) inspired by my scuba diving days and swimming in the deep ocean. The sea sponge and driftwood were found objects from our beach holidays. The white vase and tea light holder were gifts. And the silver reindeer figurine is from my Christmas decoration-collection, that I decided not to pack away.

You know, I LOVE flipping through interior design magazines. I sigh at all the stunning rooms and beautiful objects, and I appreciate fine design and craftsmanship… but being a one income family, we simply can’t justify spending thousands (or hundreds!) of dollars on pretty furniture.

So… alas most times I make and restore things myself. I find secondhand furniture and objects (from the tip or thrift shops) , I clean them up, give them a bit of paint, or sand them back to create an antique look that I adore.

And this lamp… is the first homewares item I’ve bought in a loooong time!

A Few Of My Favourite Things

January 14, 2013

On the weekend I managed to catch up on a few of my loves :)

Atomic Coffee

Cycling. I rode 40kms, mostly along the river. Then I stopped to have a 1 hour coffee chat with friends.

It was 7:30am in the morning and the cafe was bustling with breakfast orders… the smells from the kitchen were amazing.

I was very temped to order a bacon, mushroom, sausage and egg fry-up for myself, but haha I would be SO FULL… that I wouldn’t be able to ride home! I would have to take a nap, curled up, under a tree somewhere haha!

Game of Thrones

Reading. I friend of mine recommended this book to me. I’ve heard of it (years ago), but I’ve never picked it up til now.

I love it! I can’t put it down. It’s been a while since I’ve immersed myself in some awesome fiction.

Now I’m looking forward to watching the TV series.

Bok Choy Wilting

Gardening. My neighbour gave me a box full of Asian vegetable seedlings.

I’m actually not sure what they are. Bok choy? Choy sum? Nonetheless, I was so pleased to start up a new vege patch.

I transferred them into an old wine barrel… and I forgot to water them. The next day, they all wilted, and I only managed to save 50% of them. Ooops!

Anyway, I hope you all have a wonderful week ahead! :)

Getting Ready for Christmas!

December 11, 2012

Over the weekend, I decided to distract the children (and myself) by setting up the Christmas tree and decorating the house for the festive season.

However, the truth is, the kids woke me up at 5:30am one morning and they were driving me crazy so I said, RIGHT! WE’RE SETTING UP THE TREE RIGHT NOW AND ANYONE WHO DOESN’T BEHAVE NICELY HAS TO SIT OUTSIDE AND MISS OUT! HA!

As a result, they were angels.

Christmas Decorations 2012

Every year we give our Christmas Tree a “colour scheme”… this is because I am anal about having a nice looking Christmas Tree.

And this year the colours were decided by my 3.5 year old – pink and blue – his favourite colours.

Christmas Decorations 2012

I printed out some vintage Christmas bunting shapes to hang around our house.

The kids cut them out and sticky taped them to a piece of string (after I arranged them by colour and spaced them out equally). I also had to glu-tack them to the wall so that they sat flat.

I downloaded the decorations from here!

Christmas Decorations 2012

We got Mr Reindeer out of his box, set him up on my vintage table with some driftwood, gumtree branches and mirrored glass stars.

I also have some lovely Christmas table cloths (that my mother bought for me in Belgium!).

Christmas Decorations 2012

Each year I have bought something new to add to my Christmas decoration collection… hoping to create some new traditions for my children.

This year I found a cute wooden Christmas tree with 30 tiny Christmas characters (from Bed, Bath and Table) – it’s sooo cute! And this year I let my 2nd boy set it up, because my 1st boy got to hang the star on top of the tree.

By the way, I was hoping to find a beautiful wooden nativity scene too, but I couldn’t seem to find one. (Do you have a nice one, and where did you buy it?) I guess I’ll have to wait until next Christmas for it!

Family Life, Home & Garden

It’s all in my head. And hair.

November 19, 2012

On the weekend, I was doing a bit of gardening.

I was wearing my big straw hat, sunglasses, gloves and long sleeve gardening shirt for extra sun protection. That’s right, as much as I love a healthy, glowing tan… I cover up like you won’t believe.

Anyway, this particular day, I was weeding a large flower bed. It was really windy and loose hair strands from my pony tail kept flying around in the wind and annoying me. There was one particular lock of hair that wouldn’t tuck into my pony tail properly.

It kept blowing around my ears and brushing my ear lobes and tickling down the length of my neck. I kept flicking it back with my gloved hands, and trying to tuck it behind my ears.

After 15 minutes, I was so irritated by my wayward hair that exasperatedly, I threw my hat to the ground and took a minute to re-tie my pony tail.

Satisfied with my new hair do, I reached down to pick up my straw hat, then let out a blood curling squeal.

Garden Hat

My scream was so loud and so horrifying, that I made my toddler cry.

Out from my hat crawled a very large spider.

It took me a few seconds to register that IT WAS THE SPIDER – NOT MY HAIR – TICKLING ME ON THE NECK.

I stood there, IMAGINING the spider’s long, hairy legs creeping across my ear, walking down my neck and behind my ear… and connecting those images with the wispy, prickly, feathery SCUTTLE sensation that I was felling for all that time!!!!

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEKKKKK!!!!

It was REALLY BIG!

I have to admit, that the spider itself didn’t actually scare me.

IT WAS MY IMAGINATION! It was on freaking overdrive!

My brain just kept going on and on and on.

Replaying the feeling on my neck over and over again.

I just stood there dumbly while the colour drained from my face. It took me a few minutes, then I turned ghostly pale, and yup, I blacked out haha.

Iris

September 17, 2012

Iris

My favourite flower in the world is the Blue Iris.

For the first time ever, I planted half a dozen of them in my garden and finally the spring rains and warm sunshine have made them bloom for me.

*So happy!!*

I always thought that if I ever grew beautiful flowers in my garden, that I would cut them and put them into a tall glass vase in my house.

But now that I see them swaying in the breeze surrounded by other flowers, watching how the sun and light falls across their petals, how their colours change throughout the day…

I decided to leave them where they are :)

Saved from the Rubbish Truck

September 6, 2012

I found these two chairs by the side of the road! Aren’t they so cute?!

Mint Chairs

I was cycling home from a morning ride, when I noticed that someone had left a huge pile of broken wood furniture on their front verge for collection by the council. These chairs were hidden amongst the mess.

I came back (with my car) a little later and took these babies home.

They are very old, and made (mostly) of solid wood.

I was dreaming up plans to sand back the layers of paint, fix them up, stain the wood or repaint them from top to bottom.

Mint Chairs

But first I gave them a good scrub with water and soap… and very quickly I fell in love with their aged vintage look.

I might keep them as they are.

Now,  I just need to find a place to put them.

Would you like sugar with that?

August 20, 2012

This is what I have been doing the last few days.

Gardening! Celebrating the arrival of gorgeous weather! It’s nearly spring in Australia!

Pot plants

I have spent *weeks* preparing my garden beds, pulling out weeds, digging out grass, pruning roses, cutting back shrubs, removing old roots, sorting out my compost. I even found an old wooden barrel, emptied it and rolled it over to my front door to use as a flower pot!

There was so much work to do and I enjoyed every, single bit of it.

Today it was time to put in some new plants – the crowning moment!

Pot plants

I let my 3 year old son help choose some bright coloured flowers to start.

I’m planning to put in a lot more plants over the next few weeks. And I’ll be choosing some “water wise” plants too, as Australian summers can be very harsh and it’s not a good idea to have a very high-maintenance garden that needs lots of watering.

We put our flowers in the ground, gave them a good soak, stood back and admired our handiwork.

Ahh to be surrounding by such beautiful, vibrant colours!

Pot plants

Taking pleasure in such a domestic activity, I can feel that I’m on my way to becoming that happy little old lady, having a cup of tea and scones in the shade of her beautiful garden.

Okay, not yet…but one day!
