Braces

17 July 2017

Since it’s my birthday month, I thought I’d share something mildly entertaining about myself :)

Braces

When I was 14 years old, I had a severe overbite, my teeth were big and my jaw was crowded.

I had braces. Double train tracks. The whole deal.

I also had the full orthodontic headgear, which fit over my head, with straps, springs, elastics, facebow (pictured above) that fit into the braces on my teeth.

I looked like the Finding Nemo girl!

Braces

Except that MY straps went over my head, like a strap-on helmet. It was intense!

I think I had them for 18 months. It felt like much longer though.

Thankfully I didn’t have to wear my headgear during the day. Just at night.

I think back on the experience now… and I’m surprised that I wasn’t more traumatised by the whole thing haha. I recall that I accepted the idea of braces quickly (I had no choice), I was generally very apathetic about it and in the end I think somewhat enjoyed being a bit different/weird. Although I’m sure my mum and dad might have a different story.

I remember being in lots of pain, and I remember having to do a few things differently, like cutting up my food before I eat and never biting into anything with my front teeth.

I also remember I never had sleepovers outside my family/cousin’s house.

But hey! I am SO thankful that my parents had the foresight (and money) to fix my teeth.

Funny thing is, my husband also had top and bottom braces.

And it looks like ALL three of my kids will need them too.

Yikes!

The other funny things is… I still never bite into things with my front teeth and I always cut up my apples and carrots before I eat them!
