One-on-One Time

13 October 2007

Sean making MuffinsSaturday morning is my favourite time of the week.

My husband and I take one kid each, and we do something a bit special. We call it our one-on-one time.

Sometimes a bike ride to the river. A sit in a cafe. Make muffins at home. Vacuum the car. A trip to the hardware store. Plant new vegetables in the garden.

Whatever it is, the kids love it. It’s a time when they are the focus of all our attention. There’s no competition. No one to shout over. No one to fight with.

We try to create a relaxed atmosphere – if nothing actually gets done, it’s no big stress. We just chat and have a fun time.

As I type this out, I’m thinking, “Sheesh, we sound like pretty great parents!” BUT actually – this all came about from PURELY SELFISH REASONS, AND SHEER NECESSITY FOR OUR SANITY.

In the past we discovered that by the end of the week, our 4.5yo and 2.5yo boys were so sick of each other, their fighting, bickering and shocking behaviour drove us completely batty!

So splitting them up for a couple of hours makes it all good.
